Improbable Shoes

Improbable Shoes
Incongruous with our clothes
Well-suited to walking
The occasional sprint
To catch the bus when the flashers go on
Our other shoes at work
In backpacks balanced on our laps
Tossed in a heap behind doors
Under desks
Stacked neatly on bookshelves
Tucked one atop the other in the back of a file cabinet
Or secure in a locker
All of us and our improbable shoes
Then…
She climbed aboard

6-inch stilettos
International Orange Baby!
Suede with a flash of orange
On the sole betwixt heel and toe
She sat and crossed her ankles
Our eyes fixed on those beautiful shoes
We missed her Mona Lisa smile
